On Monday 30th November RIG and the DCMS ‘c&binet’ initiative jointly hosted a half-day conference with 3 principal aims:
To summarise for RIG members their rights position with BBC commissions
To outline how those rights can be further monitised through BBC outlets – BBC Worldwide, BBC Audiobooks, and in the future the BBC Archive
To gain an understanding from commercial audio distribution platforms about what opportunities are available now, and what circumstances need to be in place for future growth and new markets to emerge
The conference was a success on all fronts, with around 70 attendees from RIG member production companies, BBC and commercial distributors, and rightsholders’ groups.
There were some detailed and thought-provoking contributions from all speakers and also from the floor.
DCMS, which staged the event at its conference facilities and provided two senior speakers, was impressed with the whole event and we remain hopeful that other collaborations will follow. DCMS Creative Industries Minister Siôn Simon also joined for the after-conference drinks, to hear the positive feedback from attendees.
Materials from the event available for download on this site include the full final agenda for the day, a press release issued as the event closed and a podcast, in 4 parts, of the final session in full.
We’re extremely grateful to all those who gave their time to ensure that the event was so worthwhile, with particular thanks going to RIG Secretary, Nicholas Newton and Tim Wilson of Tim Wilson Associates for taking the lead on the day’s planning.
